Australian-style roaster from Sam Çeviköz, with cafés from Istanbul to Adana.

Çeviköz brought Australian coffee culture to Istanbul after living in Australia, and holds an Australasian Specialty Coffee Association barista trainer certification. Federal followed a split from Ministry of Coffee, whose Nişantaşı shop Çeviköz had owned, and was founded with Levent Koçarslan. The Galata shop opened under the Ministry of Coffee name, then became the first Federal.

Federal roasts in house on a Toper, every week, and buys only from Rainforest Alliance-certified farms. The range runs from single origins and the Melbourne Blend to a fermented series, including a Kenya Ruiri lot made with Hüüp, and Turkish coffee. Cafés now trade in Istanbul, Ankara, Adana, Çanakkale and Mersin.

At this shop

The shop has a black front on a narrow cobbled street in Galata, with benches on the pavement under a scalloped awning and window boxes of red geraniums. Inside, brick walls run back past a curved bar. At the front, two deep brick-arched window bays hold cushioned benches that look down onto the street, and burgers and cocktails come out alongside the coffee.
